Try something different for dinner! These hearty sandwiches offer a unique flavor with ingredients you probably already have in your pantry and refrigerator! You create the sauce from scratch, making them something you’ll be proud to serve guests or your family. We left out the mustard and liquid smoke, and they turned out beautifully, with a great sweet and smokey flavor!
This recipe will make 16 servings. Adjust accordingly.
3 cups ketchup
3/4 cups chopped onion
3/4 cups chopped green pepper
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup lemon juice
1/3 cup Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon mustard
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 1/2 teaspoon liquid smoke (optional)
1 teaspoon pickle juice (optional)
3 lbs. thinly sliced deli ham
hamburger buns, kaiser rolls, or bread of your choice
In a large saucepan, combine the first 12 ingredients. Bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer uncovered for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Place ham slices in 5-6 qt slow cooker. Add sauce on top and gently stir to combine. Tongs work well for mixing the ham with the sauce. Cook, covered, on low for 5-8 hours until heated through and ham is more tender.
Serve on rolls with pickles and chips for a great lunch or dinner!
