On our minds this morning

wedding party

So, I, Clo, am back! Am now I’m married. Now for all that fun stuff. Changing the name.. Boo. SO not looking forward to that. My husband and I just got back from our weeklong honeymoon in Maui. However, it was jam packed with tons and tons of things we did. I’ll be sure to share those all with you. And with going back to work right after I returned, ek. That make things crazier. It’s like I need time to just put up my feet and chill for a bit. Who ever knew planning a wedding and getting married could be so crazy?! Now, on to our next adventures. We have many more years to look forward to and this truly is just the beginning. What’s next? I’m not sure yet, but I’m sure it’ll be magical. I told myself years ago that when I die, hopefully many, many years from now. That I’ll be remembered as a caring, kind, hard worker and be remembered for my legacy. Not just a person that will be forgotten 100 years after my passing. So now is the time to really push and really find a way to make that mark. It’s amazing to know that I have some one who is 110% committed to my happiness and my life goals. He’s 110% committed to my blogging and career moves. Let’s just hope everything slowly pans out. Who knows where life will take us, but we’re on this road together.

What’s some of your advice for us, now that we’re married?

Xmen Apocolypse

I (Jeni), am pretty easy to entertain. Shoot…spend a day in my brain, and you’ll be laughing for hours! 😉  So, last weekend, when the boyfriend wanted to go see the new XMen movie in the theatre, I was really excited – although I really don’t like superhero movies *ducks down from jeers in the crowd*.  I like simple superheroes, like Batman or Superman. But the groups of dudes in weird costumes that all have different powers is just a little…. what’s the word I want to use…. cheesy?  It’s just not my cup of tea (especially since I prefer coffee).  BUT – I went and had a great time.  Throughout most of it, I was giggling at the ridiculousness, and enjoying Bryan’s reactions to what I thought were silly situations.  It was time together, though, and that’s what counts.  Plus, he bought me a Cherry Coke and HUGE popcorn, so I was a happy girl.  What beats movie theatre popcorn?  Well…ok, bacon does.  But at the theatre, I’ll take the popcorn with extra, greasy, artificial butter on it!

Here are my thoughts on the new XMen movie:

  • The characters were SO random.  Not knowing the background of any of them, or the stories behind their crusades, I was a  little lost.  I really wasn’t there for ME or my viewing pleasure, and didn’t really WANT to know the backstories.  That being said, the characters were silly, cheesy and their costumes were really lame.
  • There were some pretty funny parts of the movie, where I genuinely laughed.  There were also a lot of other parts where the entire audience was in an uproar of laughter, while I just sat there.  That makes for some awkwardness, for sure.
  • The situations the characters were in were totally ridiculous, but I get it – it’s from comic books.  Still, to see them acted out by real people made it funny to me.
  • The costumes….. REALLY??  Were they TRYING to find the most random costumes for these characters?  Bryan said that they are all based on the comic book characters, so that’s what they look like.  But since when does Hollywood do EXACTLY what a book dictates?  What about creative license and some fantastic costumes that are sexy (like Batman), classic (like Superman) and unique without being over the top  (like Spiderman)?

I’m really happy we went, because it was a fun time together.  And, of course, I got movie theatre popcorn.  What girl would pass up the chance to cuddle on her boyfriend’s shoulder, eat popcorn, and see a huge smile on his face for 2 hours?  Not this one!

Have you seen this movie?  What did you think?  Do you like all of these superhero movies?

As you already know, I, Clo, LOVE turtles. So when my Facebook friend posted this image on her wall I couldn’t be more amazed. Can you spot all the turtles among the rocks?

henna tattoo

Speaking of turtles.. when in Maui, I, Clo, got this amazing turtle henna tattoo. I have decided I’m gonna make it permanent. Not sure when, but soon!

in the news

Washington, D.C. along with NY and California now are at $15/hour. The D.C. Council unanimously agreed to boost the city’s hourly minimum wage to $15 on Tuesday, and Mayor Muriel E. Bowser pledged to sign the measure into law, lifting pay for low-income workers to among the highest in the country within four years.

The developments marked a victory for unions, which targeted the nation’s capital for a symbolic win in the “Fight for $15” campaign in a presidential election year.

I, Clo, feel that the minimum raise should be raised in more states. Including the states that prices for living is much higher. Alaska and Hawaii are a few of them.

See this map below for instance: the work maps how much an American worker needs to earn per hour in each state to rent a two-bedroom apartment. It finds that in no state can a person earning minimum wage afford such an apartment at market rent.

wage map

And I’ll tell you that in Hawaii, we don’t get anywhere near $30/hour.. Sadly we’re still at $8.50/hour. Let’s hope things change, and quick.

Jeni’s thoughts on this:

Here’s my thing on minimum wage: these are meant to be temporary and transitional jobs. So, although the map seems really bleak and sad, getting an education and creating a career is what will keep Americans afloat.  Granted – it’s tough to find a great paying job out there, because there just aren’t many.  The market is SUPER competitive.  I have an archeologist friend with 2 PhDs in science, who works at Barnes & Noble.  So, I get it.  But this map bothers me, because minimum wage jobs aren’t meant to be the be all, end all of your potential income.  Another point I have to make is that the money has to come from somewhere.  We can’t just MAKE more money to give to the American people.  It doesn’t work like that, and our checks and balances have to add up.  Giving more money for minimum wage only RAISES the cost of living.  Those are my thoughts, as harsh as they may sound.  Americans are just too used to be coddled, and comfortable in a transitional job, instead of striving for more.  Keep minimum wage at a fair, low number, and force us to get out there and make a solid living for ourselves in the long term!

  1. Congratulations on your wedding! My best advice for newlyweds, don’t say negative things about one another to other people, especially family. Support one another in all endeavors and talk, talk, talk to one another.

I agree with Shirley, I am not married for so long, but I always respect my husband.

  2. I agreed to what you said about the minimum wage. As much as people fighting say no these jobs are all we can find which I do understand it’s hard to do I have been there and it is not easy I agree. The thing is is you’re supposed to motivate you to want more in life and that should be just a transitional place.

  3. Good morning everyone!
So glad that Morning Coffee is back, life feels normal again, yeah!

Congrats on getting married and enjoying some time off Clo, you deserve it. I’ve never been married, but I consider myself married. I’ve been together with my boyfriend for the past 8 and a half years. One thing I’ve learned is never go to bed angry, and be there for each other no matter what comes up. Praying that your marriage is healthy and happy!

I love superheroes, but don’t like the superhero movies. The “new looks” they give the characters are awful, a lot of the costumes are barely recognizable. And they give them that whole metallic look, like the new Wonder Woman costume, like seriously, Wonder Woman needs to be bright red and blue and not metallic/washed out looking. I felt that way about the new Superman also.

Jen you have to try bacon popcorn, seriously! There are some easy ways to get it like Kettle brand Maple Bacon Flavored popcorn which is pretty much heaven in a bag, quite literally. Or you can get J&D’s Bacon Pop or Cheddar Bacon Pop microwavable popcorn. There’s also Kernel Seasoning’s Bacon Cheddar popcorn seasoning, though it’s a little too salty. If you want to make it yourself, there are recipes all over the Internet that make standard butter or cheddar popcorn using bacon grease to make bacon flavored popcorn. Seriously, once you have bacon popcorn, you’ll never want movie theater popcorn again and I used to love movie theater popcorn.

    Have a great day everyone!

  4. During the Summer, my kids and I are outside playing in the yard almost every day. What a great deal on the bikes, scooters, etc. I’d love to take advantage of that deal!

  5. That turtle henna tattoo is really cute. I definitely thought it was a real tattoo when I first saw the picture.

  6. Congrats Clo! I can’t offer any specific advice, just have fun! My boyfriend and I were going to see the new Xmen until we saw some of the ratings, yikes!

  7. congratulations for your wedding.I havent got any advice as i am not married yet but yeah i guess honesty in any relationship helps a lot.have fun

  8. Congrats on your wedding and new marriage. Here’s to many happy times ahead. I haven’t seen the X-men movie yet. Though I have heard good reviews, I will be waiting till it comes out on DVD. I’m a little superheroed out at the moment.

  9. I heard the movie was not that great, that is why we are going to wait for it to it the TV.
And as far as minimum wag, I do not understand how folks don’t get that the more money in the economy, the belter it will be for us al!

  10. Congratulations on your marriage! Love the ideas about bikes and such for my kids, they’ll come in handy with summer approaching.

  11. Congrats on getting married, not much on my mind except I am moving so dealing with all that comes with moving!

  12. Elizabeth O. Reply

Congratulations! That’s a lovely wedding picture of the whole family. I’m sure you had the blast during the honeymoon! Just remember that in any relationship, communication is key. I think the X-Men: Apocalypse was a nice movie, I really don’t mind them sticking to the costumes in the comic books that’s what they’ve done to all the Marvel movies anyway. Awesome deals!

  13. Massive congrats Clo on getting hitched. My advice is. Laugh together every blessed day and Keep DATING each other. Dont forget to Sext him, daily or at least 3 times a week. make it pat of your tradition So he is all ready when you guys link up in the evenings keeps things sizzling…!

Hmmm out UK Minimum wage is £7.20/hr so you guys may just have pipped a whole nation @ $15/hr

    Great Coffee morning!

  14. Ryan Escat Reply

You are so honest on your X-men movie review, I will see it myself. Thanks for the advice!

  15. Love those battery operated scooters and bikes. Amazing finds indeed!

  16. Danne Reed Reply

I spotted 19 turtles, am I right? I love seeing new couples, hope you two work things out and stay married.

  17. Congrats on the nuptials, that is really exciting. COMMUNICATION is the key, it sucks to hear because everyone says it but it will save you some heartache. When you do have heartache it will help you move past it.

  18. Nicole Haas Etolen Reply

I am a fan of X-men movies but you were right, there are so many characters that we don’t know their origin.

  19. Looks like my state (Arkansas) has the lowest cost of living, yet minimum wage still isn’t enough for a lot of people. Never mind the fact that many people have families to support. New York is crazy, though! I know people there who pay over $800 a month just for ONE room in a house.

  20. What a fun post – I enjoyed reading a little bit about everything! Congrats on getting married. Life can be so busy, make sure to make time for yourself and keep up with date nights especially with kids.
We have two weeks left of school to go, which are probably some of the most hectic in the year.. Happy almost Friday!

  21. Congratulations on your marriage. Your wedding looks like it was a ton of fun! Enjoy your new life together.

  22. Wow! You’ve found a lot of awesome deals! The minimum wage thing seems to be pointless though. As the wage rises so will the prices of everything else sadly.

  23. I’ve heard so much lately about the Samsung 55″ 4K Smart TV – would love to have one.
