Blue Orange Games has been publishing and promoting award-winning games for over 18 years. Their focus is on quality and durability, because they want the games to stand the test of time. Anyone with children can appreciate that! Their games are unique, engaging, fun to play and really easy to learn. Even more, many of their games aim at helping children with skills like memory, logic, math, dexterity and cooperation. That’s just one more thing parents can appreciate. They love when families unplug from electronics, and enjoy a classic bonding family game night, so all of their games fit the bill for family entertainment.  With over 200 awards won, it’s no wonder Blue Orange Games are on our list this year for gift suggestions!

I (Jeni) score their three newest games to check out. These were certainly an adventure! I felt like each game took me back in time to a different, mystical and sometimes mythical era.  Scarabya, Kingdomino Expansion Age of Giants and Blue Lagoon were interesting, engaging and really ignite imagination!

1-4 Players
Ages 8 & up

You are a seasoned archaeologist who is competing against your colleagues to find the most Scarabs relics. These golden beetle amulets are extremely valuable as they can help solve ancient mysteries about the long-gone civilizations that created them. They are known to be scattered across the world: buried in the Egyptian desert, hidden deep in the Amazon rainforest, immersed in the Bermuda Triangle, and frozen in Antarctica. To find them, lead your team on an expedition to set up camps and mark out areas of excavation. Will you be the archaeologist who finds the most Scarabs and uncovers the mysteries of Scarabya? In this clever puzzle game, the goal is to position pentomino tiles to create zones of 1 to 4 squares, that contain scarabs. Those scarabs are worth the size of the zone they are in (1 to 4 points). Each tile is placed simultaneously by all players on their individual board, in the order they are drawn. The player with the most points after all tiles have been placed or discarded, wins the game.

Kingdomino Expansion Age of Giants
2-5 Players
Ages 8 & up

Age of Giants is a fun expansion to the popular game Kingdomino. If you are not familiar with Kingdomino yet, Kingdomino is dominoes with a kingdom building twist. Each turn, connect a new domino to your existing kingdom, making sure at least one of its sides connects to a matching terrain type already in play. The game mechanics for obtaining the tiles is clever: the order of who picks first depends on which tile was previously chosen. Make sure to secure tiles with crowns- these royal treasures help to multiply the worth of your kingdom at the end of the game! The game ends when each player has completed a 5×5 grid, and then points are counted based on number of connecting tiles and crowns.

Blue Lagoon
2-4 Players
Ages 8 & up

Blue Lagoon is a set collection game with an area control mechanic. Each player manages a group of settlers that spread out on the islands of a newly-discovered archipelago, discovering its wealth and building villages as they explore. Points are awarded for collecting resources and settling on the islands. Smart placement and anticipation are needed to win.

As you can see, these games really invoke imagination! When kids need to unplug, spend some quality sibling time or you need to stock that family game night game closet – consider Blue Orange Games. These are unlike any other games you’ll find out there, and I know you’ll fall in love with them just like I did!
