Want more Morning Coffee? Catch up on the fun you missed HERE!

Here’s something you may not know about me (Jeni) –  I was adopted.  I was adopted in 1979, out of the Foster Care System, which, in the 70’s, wasn’t a place where kids were adopted. It was a system where kids were put into healthy homes, while the birth-parents adjusted and learned to become better parents. In fact, my little sister and I were the first siblings to be adopted out of the Foster Care System in the state of California! 🙂

I’m SO grateful for the parents I was adopted by, and the childhood I was given. My birth-parents didn’t give us to the system because they didn’t love us.  They gave us to the system because they DID love us and wanted us to have a better life than they could provide at the time, and for that – I will be more grateful than they could ever know.

I’ve always known I was adopted, and my parents were very open and honest about it with me.  I remember having this awesome book about adoption, and feeling different, but SPECIAL because I was adopted.

Are you or do you know someone that was adopted?  What kind of experiences do you want to share?

Remember when Jeni talked about art and how she just doesn’t get it on Morning Coffee? Well I (Sarah) pretty much was in agreement that I don’t understand art. However, I have found some awesome art that I finally do understand. Dave Pollot is an artist who buys popular artwork at thrift stores and add’s popular characters to classic pieces of art. The characters are painted so that they look like they fit right into the art pieces.

I was completely taken in by Dave Pollot’s creativity. What a fun way to make art into something that you can relate to. As I started searching the Internet for the artwork, I came across this other artist by the name of David Irvine who does the same thing with popular characters. He had a variety of characters in his paintings as well.

Here’s a Stormtrooper mowing the lawn

Here’s He Man making a getaway in a teacup

You can check out more of Dave Pollot’s work here and David Irvine’s work here. I am totally wanting to get a few pieces of their art to hang in our living room.

What popular character would you like to see painted into a classic painting?

Got a gamer in your house? This awesome leather gaming chair is just $65.59!

Head over to Amazon for this awesome deal on Elmer’s purple disappearing glue sticks. 60 glue sticks is just $15.87. You’ll have plenty leftover to donate to your child’s school!

Taco Bell fans can recreate the beloved Taco Bell sauce taste at home. This bottle of mild sauce is just $1.49!

Love classic movies?  Score this TCM Greatest Classic Legends Film Collection: Lucille Ball (The Long, Long Trailer / Forever Darling / Room Service / Du Barry Was a Lady) for only $11.79!!

I (Sarah) love animals. I love when animals interact with other types of animals, and show that they have a heart. This golden retriever definitely has a huge heart. A baby fawn is drowning in the Long Island Sound and the golden retriever comes to the rescue and pulls the fawn out. For a few seconds, it looks like the golden retriever is overly playful and doesn’t understand why the fawn is now shaken. But the video will definitely give you the case of awwww’s.

Have you ever seen an animal help another animal?

That weird looking thing is an Angry Mama Microwave Cleaner! This cracks me (Jeni) up!  Add vinegar and water, place in microwave, turn it on and watch her get “steamed” 😉  Then, you can just wipe down your microwave.  Sure, you could use a bowl with vinegar and water in it – but isn’t this way more fun!?

How to you clean your microwave?

I (Sarah) love my boyfriend, but let’s face it, all relationships have their ups and downs. They also have their moments where you just want to scream because you’ve explained the same exact thing one hundred times. For those in the same boat, there are these awesome Passive Aggressive notes. The notes have a fill in the blank format and you check off the appropriate options and fill in your thoughts. It’s a great way to communicate without yelling and screaming.

Do you live with someone where these notes would come in handy?

I (Jeni) LOVE almonds.  They are my favorite nut.  My sister recently gave me a bag of these Suntree Snickerdoodle Almonds and OH MY GOSH – they are ridiculously yummy!  Needless to say, the bag was gone within 30 minutes.  I looked around online to find more, and they are super expensive on Amazon…. so I’ll be asking where she found them in-store so I can get more!

Have you recently found a new yummy snack?

I (Sarah) miss the day of vinyl record albums being all the rage. I recently found this book while shopping for a record collector’s birthday that would make an awesome gift for any fan of music of the past. It’s called 1,000 Record Covers and it features the cover artwork of 1,000 different record albums. What a cool idea!

Are you a vinyl fan?

I (Jeni) love working out.  It makes me feel great, and helps me lose this stupid belly fat that won’t go away.  My little sister just shared this Booty Burn Workout with me and said she did 2 reps and was DONE.  I tried it, and was able to do 3 reps before I felt like my legs were disconnected from my body, and I was barely able to walk!  Give it a try!!

What’s your favorite workout routine?

I (Sarah) recently found the most outrageously, delicious, perfect ice cream sundae recipe of all time…the Unicorn Waffle Taco Sundae! Seriously, it’s got bright colors, and the taco portion is made with waffles. It looks as though a unicorn made the sundae just for you. It doesn’t get any more perfect than that.

How do you like to eat sundaes?

  1. That microwave cleaner is a brilliant idea. I use a bowl to clean our microwave, or the glass measuring cup, but this is so much cuter!

  2. I’m so glad that your family was always so open about adoption. There’s a lot of families that are not and I think it’s more of a shock to the child. Sounds like you are very well-adjusted and that you had some great adopted parents.

    • Jeanette, you are so right. I’ve worked with lots of adopted children in the past, and many parents (both birth parents and adoptive parents) try to lie to kids about what happened. It’s always best to tell kids the truth, even when the truth hurts, because they always find out sooner or later. Thanks for joining us!

    • Stacie, I’m with you, I love the Kool Aid Man painting, I can totally see that in my living room above the desk. Thanks for joining us!

  3. That’s awesome that you and your sister were the first ones adopted out of the Foster Care System in California! Very nice! I just recently reconnected with one of my nephews who was adopted by his step-dad when he was little. Being a Star Wars fan, I love the painting of the Stormtrooper mowing the lawn! I love the chart for Booty Burn. When I workout legs and glutes, I mainly do squats, goblet squats and a few other exercises specific for the butt and legs. Suggestion? When you’re done with your set, add a 30-second plank and 20 jumping jacks at the end of each set!

    • Ladonna, I think the art is pretty cool too, I can see how a Star Wars fan would love to own the Storm Trooper Lawn Mowing painting. I think this artist really puts a twist on art to make it something that everyone can relate to, which is really cool. Thanks for joining us!

  4. Snickerdoodle Almonds? Are you kidding me? sounds pretty dang weird but I know my family would love to give Snickerdoodle Almonds a go!

    • Cathi, I haven’t had a chance to try the snicker doodle almonds just yet, but I totally want to. Thanks for joining us!

  5. I am so totally addicted to Taco Bell! I’ve always made tostadas at home, but they were never the same because of the sauce. Then one day I happened to look up in the Mexican food section of my grocery store and there it was! I bought two bottles and it was fantastic! I highly recommend it to all Taco Bell fans.

    • Cherri, I heard about Taco Bell sauce being available in stores for the first time sort of the same way. We were walking down one of the aisles, looking for a salsa to dip quesadilla slices in and I saw the sauce. I’ve been hooked ever since!

  6. Jennifer Van Huss Reply

What a beautiful adoption story!! Too often people share the downside to adoption! This is great uplifting story!

    • Jeni Hawkins Reply

Thanks so much, Jennifer! I’m very fortunate, for sure!

    • Jennifer, I agree hands down, you always read about negative adoption stories online. It’s nice to hear Jeni’s positive adoption story. Thanks for joining us!

  7. It’s always cool when you stumble upon some art that you like. There’s definitely a lot of art that just doesn’t “click” with me. I like the artwork you found!

    • Jeni Hawkins Reply

Right? I don’t like art, but that stuff is neat!

    • Liz, I feel the exact same way about art. I will go to museums that have art among other exhibits, and they will always say something like “multi millionaire dollar painting” in the guide book, and I will look at the painting and see dots or swirls, and I’m like someone paid millions of dollars for that? It always makes me want to finger paint a bunch of lines, dots, and squiggles, and try to label it as “art”. Thanks for joining us!

  8. I just love reading your Morning Coffee posts! It’s like a talk show on the blogosphere! Kudos Ladies! Love!

    • Jeni Hawkins Reply

HAHA! Thanks, Autumn! We love doing it and are so glad you’re here with us!

    • Autumn, thanks for the kudos, we love Morning Coffee. It’s our chance to chit chat with our readers, share cool stuff that we’ve found, and start the day off with a smile. Thanks for joining us!

  9. Snickerdoodle almonds?? Those look wonderful. I don’t get art either, really. I just know what I like, and those art pieces are great!

    • Jeni Hawkins Reply

Those almonds are AMAZING! And yah, I don’t get art, but those are pretty neat! Sarah found some cool stuff!

    • Connie, I’m with you. I don’t understand art at all, but I know when I see something that interests me, or catches my eye. I haven’t had a chance to try snicker doodle almonds yet, but I totally want too! Thanks for joining us!

    • Maria, I’m with you on that. I used to teach preschool and there were lots of children who were adopted. Some had awesome home lives and others, you wonder if their original parents really could have been much worse than their current situation. So sad, it’s always great to hear awesome success stories like Jeni’s. Thanks for joining us!

  10. Wow I really love Dave Pollot’s art style! My husband and I used to be gamers but I would still love that chair for work! It looks SUPER comfy compared this piece o crap I am sitting in lol

    • Joely, I think that chair would be the perfect chair for you. I think every household has that “piece of junk chair”. I know we use a dining room metal chair, with a pillow on top, with a chair cover on it as a desk chair and I hate it. I guess that’s why I use my laptop so much…for comfort. Thanks for joining us!

    • Kelly, that chair would be awesome in a child’s bedroom. Completely comfortable, cool looking, fun, and functional all at the same time. Because it’s meant to be for teens and adults, it’s something that your child could use for years to come. Thanks for joining us and for shopping with us!

  11. Love the fun microwave cleaner, would make a good bridal shower gift with some other kitchen gadgets.

    • Jeni Hawkins Reply

Ohhhh, yes it would! That’s a great idea for a bridal gift!

    • Kristi, the microwave cleaner would make an awesome bridal shower gift, especially if you know a Bridezilla, as sort of a joke (that they may or may not get, but you totally would). Thanks for joining us!

  12. That desk chair is awesome! I might have to look into getting one of those for my office.

    • Sarah, it really is a great desk chair at an affordable price. It looks really cool too, which is always a bonus…fun and functional at the same time. Thanks for joining us and shopping with us!

    • Chelley, I bet I would love your friend’s paintings! We are huge Friday The 13th fans in our household. I love when they take art I don’t understand at all and infuse it with something that I can totally relate to. It’s awesome. Thanks for joining us and telling us about your friend’s talent!

  13. I’m glad you had a great childhood. You’re very lucky that you have parents who gave you a good life and it’s nice that you understand why your birth-parents have to give you up for adoption. I think kids who are adopted are special too, because they were chosen by their parents.

    • Jeni Hawkins Reply

Thanks, Carol! 🙂 And I totally agree that we are pretty special because we were chosen!

    • Carol, I agree, Jen is very lucky. Unfortunately in the past I’ve worked with many children who were adopted (or worse their awful parents kept them) that were not so lucky. It’s always nice to know that there are some good cases out there, since we usually only hear about the bad ones. Thanks for joining us!

    • Toni, I am loving that microwave cleaner. We usually use a glass measuring cup and a sponge, but this is so much cuter. I will have to get it just to try it and see if it works. Thanks for joining us!

  14. This dog is a lot helpful and compassionate than those teenagers who watched a man drowned. It makes you want to appreciate dogs more than human sometimes.

    • Chubskulit, I agree so much with you, there are so many times when animals show compassion to other species, that we as human beings could learn from. Thanks for joining us!

    • Brianne, the unicorn ice cream waffle sundae is amazing, so tasty! Unicorns are awesome! Thanks for joining us!

  15. I love the leather gaming chair! My son needs a new computer desk chair and this one is perfect!

    • Sara, it is an awesome chair at a great price, I’m sure your son will love it! Thanks for joining us!

  16. My cousin was adopted. She was already in her teens when my aunt adopted her. Now she’s a doctor and has her own family. She loves my aunt so much.

    • Jeni Hawkins Reply

That’s an amazing story!! I love it that she had a great life and is now a DOCTOR! WOW!

    • Dogvills, thanks for sharing your cousin’s adoption story. It’s always a great thing when adoptions end with a happy ending! Thanks for joining us!

  17. You always share so many great things in your posts.

My husband just bought a gaming chair on Prime day but it was a bit more expensive. Too bad he didn’t see the one in your post, I think he would have liked it better.

    • Uprunforlife, unfortunately it sounds like you learned the same lesson that everyone else does, that Prime Day deals are not always the most amazing deals around. I hope your husband likes his new chair anyway. Thanks for joining us!

  18. Wow what a wonderful story you shared with us about being adopted! I agree about the Prime Day deals, I was disappointed!

    • Reesa, every year I’ve ordered on Prime Day the order has either been cancelled or shipped 2-3 months later. I LOVE shopping on Amazon, but I generally steer clear of Prime Day. Thanks for joining us!

  19. Oh my gosh – snickerdoodle flavor is my favorite! Must try those almonds!!

  20. Leigh Anne Borders Reply

I seriously did not know what to expect from the title of this post; however, I love how you are sharing your thoughts on everything. I can definitely agree with you on many points. I have seen the commercials for that Angry Mom Microwave Cleaner. It looks silly and I wonder if it really works!

    • Leigh Ann, we love covering a wide variety of topics on Morning Coffee. The randomness of life is what makes it interesting. Thanks for joining us!

  21. I didnt know you were adopted. Thanks for sharing a tadbit about your adoption story and glad you had an awesome family who loved you!

    • Kiwi, I’m glad Jeni shared her adoption story as well. It shows that there is such thing as a happy adoption, since usually we only hear about the horror stories. Thanks for joining us!

  22. Gabriel Bregg Reply

Some good friends of ours just adopted two sisters and it’s a pretty special thing to watch. Similar situation as yours, where the mother knew she could never provide a good life for the little girls and our friends were lucky enough to get chosen to get them.
