I (Sarah) am struggling to get through summer. To me, summer is the longest season, and we seem to be getting heat wave after heat wave here in Southern California. I have such a hard time keeping track of how hot it is outside, when to apply sunscreen, and how much water to drink. My health problems complicate summer even more. I have three FREE apps on my tablet that I LOVE that help make summer more tolerable.

The Heat Safety Tool app has a very simple interface. It keeps track of the heat index (not just the temperature) in your area so you know how hot it actually is outside. It also makes recommendations as to whether or not outdoor activities are safe in the heat. Get the app: Android and Apple

The Sunzapped app is great for people like me who don’t keep track of applying sunscreen when they are outdoors. The Sunzapped app actually prevents you from getting sunburned. It sets off reminders when it’s time to reapply sunscreen, can be customized based on the SPF level of protection that you are using, and makes clothing recommendations about what to wear to avoid getting sunburned. My favorite part about this app is that it actually tells you when it’s time to get out of the sun so that you don’t get sunburned. Get the app: Android and Apple

Finally there’s the Waterlogged app. The Waterlogged app helps you keep track of how much water you have consumed, but it also shows you how much water you have left to drink for the day. It also has some really cool graphs that show you how much water you’ve consumed over time. If you do a lot of outdoor activities in the summer time, this app will help keep you hydrated all summer long. Get the app: Apple

What is your favorite app to use in the Summer?

Check that out.  Yep – Christmas stuff!  I (Jeni) was cruising around Hobby Lobby this weekend, and was pretty surprised to see a TON of Christmas items out already.  I’m all about being prepared.  I’m all about stocking up for Christmas decorations and gifts all year (see our post Christmas 365 for more about that!) and I’m all about Christmas because I love it.  But I don’t remember years before, seeing holiday decor and Christmas items in full display in stores until at least back to school shopping is over.

After getting over my shock, I started enjoying the winter wonderland!  There were tons of trees, ornaments, decor and even gifts on display – like, aisles and aisles of them. And even more surprising, there were a lot of people shopping them! NONE of the things for Thanksgiving or Christmas were on sale – everything was full price, and I wondered, “Who buys holiday stuff at full price in July? Why not wait a few months and stock up, or better yet, wait until after the holidays to grab the serious sales!?”

Do you buy Christmas decor when it’s not on sale?

I (Sarah) recently got this game What Would You Do For A Klondike Bar? It’s a lot of fun. It’s sort of like a truth or dare style game. You have to stock your freezer with Klondike Bars before playing (not in the rules, but it’s a must!). Collect the most mini Klondike Bars and you win. Plus, it’s just $9!

Are you trying to drink more water this summer? If so, you need an infuser water bottle. This BPA free Tritan water infuser bottle is just $7.95 in  a variety of colors.

This adorable mermaid tail blanket is just $5.99!

I (Sarah) am a huge Star Trek fan, and I was delighted when I found out they now make Star Trek swimsuits. How cool are these Star Trek bikinis and one piece Star Trek swimsuits? The hardest part is deciding which color to buy!

Would you wear a Star Trek bathing suit?

I (Sarah) love Kettle potato chips. They are my absolute favorite brand of chips. Kettle is always coming out with new flavors. Some of them turn into all time favorites for me, like sea salt and vinegar, while others like their jalapeno flavors don’t appeal to me at all. Last night I found this tasty flavor I had never seen before Tropical Salsa. These chips are made with avocado oil and mango infused salt. The chips are fantastic, seriously like eating a summer salsa on a hot day while drinking margaritas.

What flavor of chips would you like to see Kettle make?

I (Jeni) LOVE watermelon!  When I saw this awesome Watermelon Slicer, I knew I had to have it 🙂  It has a neat curve that cuts  into the watermelon without wasting any of it by cutting with a normal knife.  So easy and SO cool – and really cheap, too! Plus, you can use it for a ton of other fruits, as well.

Do you buy kitchen gadgets like this?

OMG OMG OMG OMG!  You guys know that I (Jeni) LOVE The Golden Girls! I just found this Golden Girls Coloring Book at Target this weekend, and it’s pretty dang amazing. I could have saved a few bucks by buying it on Amazon, though, because it’s cheaper there – but that’s ok, because I’m just happy I have it!  Wooooohoooo!

Do you have a favorite coloring book?

This right here is TOO COOL!  It’s a Jellyfish Aquarium with live jellyfish inside!   Plus, it changes colors – which changes the colors of the jellyfish, as well. Jellyfish pets…. hmmmmm…..  sounds pretty unique!

What’s the strangest pet you’ve ever had?

Check out those flavors!!!  One of my (Jeni) favorite things in this world (besides Marky Mark, and bacon, of course) is a uniquely flavored coffee.  Brew La La Coffee makes the most awesome flavors of coffee you’ll ever have!  Seriously….check out my review, and then treat  yourself!  TREAT YO SELF!

What’s your favorite flavor of coffee?

I (Sarah) grew up with Jell-O pudding pops until they discontinued them. They were like a fudgesicle only much tastier. I could seriously live off them as a child during summer vacation. I recently came across a chocolate pudding pops copycat recipe that tastes just like the real thing. Jell-O actually has a recipe on their website, but this one is much tastier and a lot more authentic to the original pudding pops I knew and loved growing up.

  1. That jellyfish aquarium is AMAZING, like truly, jellyfish without the stinging and you never have to feed them? Love it!

  2. I can’t believe that they already have Christmas stuff up. Every time I see it and I’m sweating it out because it’s June or July it drives me crazy. Let’s get through a couple other holidays before we start putting Christmas stuff out LOL.

    • Jeni Hawkins Reply

HAHAHA! Yah, sweating and Christmas don’t really go together!

    • Jeanette, I know EXACTLY what you mean. It seems that Christmas gets earlier and earlier. The stores in our area always seem so out of whack date and holiday wise that I go crazy. Swimsuits available in December, school clothes in June, winter clothes in July, Christmas and Halloween up side by side in August, it’s like wait, what? laugh. Thanks for joining us!

  3. Sitting in porch drinking cup tea. Mermaid tail is going be Christmas gift for sure. Hobby Lobby is always ready first with Christmas items. I don’t mind.

    • Jeni Hawkins Reply

Ohhhhh a cup of tea on the porch sounds GREAT!!!! I love Christmas so it was exciting, but I just don’t remember this happening last year!

    • Candy, I think the mermaid tail blanket would make a great Christmas gift. It’s like a piece of summer magic when Winter rolls around. Thanks for joining us!

  4. My favorite app for summer – and all seasons, really – is the My Fitness Pal app. It’s been great for helping me keep track of my calories, and more importantly, my water intake.

    • Jeni Hawkins Reply

awesome! I’ll totally check that out – thanks!

    • Stacie, water tracking apps are awesome aren’t they? They are a friendly little reminder that you need to drink more water, especially during the summer time when having fun and kids driving you crazy makes you forget to take care of you. Thanks for joining us!

  5. Thanks for the cute memes to start off my Monday!

My kids love Klondike bars, and they have so many different flavors now. We love the mint chocolate chip.

My daughter has a really cheap jellyfish aquarium, it’s kind of junk, but cute idea.

    • Jeni Hawkins Reply

I LOVE the mint chocolate chip Klondikes, too!!!

    • Marysa, I haven’t tried the mint chocolate chip Klondike bars yet, how could I not know they existed? I will definitely look for that flavor when I’m at the grocery store tomorrow. Thanks for joining us!

    • Amber, I agree, the jellyfish aquarium is awesome. I definitely need one of those for my living room. I can see it now, relaxing on the couch in my mermaid tail blanket, watching the little mermaid, while the jellyfish swim around…that’s my idea of the perfect summer vacation!

    • Kristen, Christmas music in August makes you a huge Christmas fan. I get enough Christmas music in December, and try to drown it out in November in stores, laugh. Thanks for joining us!

  6. Summer here in Las Vegas is nothing but a continuous six month heat wave, so I understand how real the struggle is. Making those chocolate pudding pops would be a great way to stay cool!

    • Marcie, I can only imagine Las Vegas summers are miserable. California summers are bad enough! Pudding pops are the ultimate summer treat. I remember when you could pick them up in the grocery’s freezer aisle, so tasty!

  7. I have to get that Sunzoid app! I live in Florida and invariably forget to reapply lotion. I’ll just have to turn the ringer up so I can hear it over the waves.

    • Alicia, sunscreen is one of those annoying things about summer. You are not the only one who forgets to reapply sunscreen when you are outdoors and having fun, no one wants to stop to do that. It’s great that there are apps that can scream at people like me “you forgot the sunscreen do you want a sunburn again”, laugh. Thanks for joining us!

  8. There’s nothing wrong with stocking up and preparing for Christmas early. I should be doing that too. I need to try one of those infuser bottles!

    • Liz, infuser water bottles are awesome! You can add a different fruit or whatever you want to use for infusing ingredients each time you fill it up. Some of my favorites are raspberries and blueberries. Thanks for joining us!

  9. Wow! So much information! I would TOTALLY wear a one piece Star Trek suit…man, I’d be the rockingest older woman there (what consistutes older woman?!). I LOVE the unique flavored coffees too!

    • Barrie, you don’t have to feel old at all, seriously 50 is the new 40, you totally can rock a Star Trek swimsuit at any age. Thanks for joining us!

  10. I always have my water infuser with me! Love them! My daughter wants one of those mermaid tails!
Funny about the Klondike bar game. I just had a Klondike bar two nights ago!

    • Joely, I definitely want a mermaid blanket for myself, how awesome is a mermaid tail for a blanket? Klondike bars are a great summer treat. They make so many flavors now, when I was a kid I just remember Klondike bars, now you have to pick your favorite. Though I did see a variety pack the other day at our local grocery store. Thanks for joining us!

  11. My youngest daughters both have mermaid tail blankets that they use every night! That Jellyfish Aquarium seems so interesting.

    • Kristin, what a fun thing to have at the end of a long day…a mermaid tale blanket, there’s no better way to drift off to a peaceful dreamland than that. I think the jellyfish aquarium is awesome. I would love to have one in my home! Thanks for joining us!

  12. Amy Desrosiers Reply

I was actually surprised to see Halloween stuff already. I guess I shouldn’t be though since Hobby Lobby has Christmas–wow!

    • Amy, I haven’t seen Halloween stuff out in stores yet. They are putting the back to school stuff away now, so I’m sure it’s coming by the weekend. Thanks for joining us!

  13. That mermaid tail is adorable! I can’t believe it’s so cheap too. I may have to get a couple of those for my daughters.

    • Kathy, I bet your daughters would love the mermaid tails. What little girl (or big girl for that matter) wouldn’t? Thanks for joining us!

  14. I sure look forward to your lists. That mermaid blanket is such a good deal, I think I’ll get the nieces each one for their birthday.

    • Kristi, the mermaid tail blankets are an awesome price right now. Summer is one of the best times to buy winter clothes and winter blankets because they are all on sale while everyone else is buying swimsuits and beach towels. Your nieces would love the mermaid tail blankets for sure. Thanks for joining us and shopping with us!

  15. I’m a little lost with the post, but I love the mermaid tail.

    • Ra’Nesha, is there anything about Morning Coffee in particular that had you confused or lost? We’d love to clarify it if we are able too. The mermaid tail craze is so much fun. Thanks for joining us!

    • Ricci, the cool thing about the mermaid tail craze is that they make blankets, fins you can swim with, beach towels, all sorts of things. It’s an awesome craze and finally one that I enjoy, and not something that makes me think, what the heck? LOL. Thanks for joining us!

    • OurFamilyWorld, I love that watermelon slicer as well. Our household loves watermelon, but because I’m always the one that gets stuck cutting it, and because it makes such a mess, we don’t eat it very often. I’m definitely looking forward to trying that slicer to make my life easier, and less stickier. Thanks for joining us!

  16. I need to look into these apps. I am fair skinned and burn easily. The different coffee flavours sound yummy. It’s like drinking your dessert.

    • Stacie, the apps are awesome. Especially the one that tells you when to reapply sunscreen. Seriously, you tell it what SPF you are using, and it does the rest. It’s so easy to use, it’s like having a “mom” around to remind you to reapply sunscreen, without the nagging. Thanks for joining us!

  17. It is way too early for Christmas decorations. I don’t even want to think about that until after school starts up again. I like to buy decorations after the holidays to get them at a bargain but sometimes I can’t help myself if I see something I really like.

    • Sherry, I also think it’s too early for Christmas. However, my boyfriend ran to Walmart this morning, and they’ve already removed the summer garden area to set up for Christmas. Considering that it’s the hottest summer that I can remember in Southern California, I can’t even imagine how they can be thinking Christmas already. Thanks for joining us!

  18. Apps for the summer? I usually just use the weather and a health app that tracks the steps, diet, etc. I think it’s awesome that there’s a copycat recipe for those popsicles! I would love to give it a go one of these days!!!!

    • Carol, if you ever ate the original Jell-O Pudding Pops, the copycat recipe tastes exactly the same. Hands down better than a Fudgesicle and all of the other chocolate popsicles out there. Thanks for joining us!

  19. I can not start my day without a cup of coffee. I need it to get energize. Summer here in East TN is a little bit tolerable. Glad we are surrounded by mountains and plenty of shaded trails to get to the waterfalls. Hiking is our big outdoor activities here.

    • Jeni Hawkins Reply

I hear you, Farrah! Coffee is a MUST in the mornings, and here in Texas – even though it’s hot, coffee is a must. I’m so jealous you’re surrounded by mountains! Sounds so peaceful!

    • Farrah, I bet your area is gorgeous with the hiking trails, trees, nature, and waterfalls. That’s one thing I miss about our area…nature. They took the grass, most of the trees, plants, and bushes out a few years ago to save water in the Southern California desert, now we are left with lots of dirt that blows everywhere and reminds me of Arizona. Thanks for joining us!

    • Autumn, I agree on the jellyfish aquarium. I might have to get it for myself as a Christmas present. You can always do that, as an adult, and just write to (your name) and from Santa, no one will ever know the difference, laugh. Thanks for joining us!

  20. The Star Trek bikinis and bathing suits are too funny! I’m all about frozen treats in the summer and those Klondike look yummy! Thanks for sharing some fun stuff! Need to check out that Golden Girls book I have a friend who would die for that! 🙂

    • Victoria, I’m all about the Star Trek swimsuits, they are awesome. Thanks for joining us!

  21. So much good stuff here! The watermelon slicer is great. I hate cutting watermelon and this would make it super easy. And that Golden Girls coloring book is everything!

    • Vicky, I agree on the watermelon slicer, anything to make that sticky taste easier is awesome in my book. Thanks for joining us!

  22. My daughter asked me for a mermaid tail blanket at Costco yesterday! They are definitely all the rage.

    • Sara, I can’t blame your daughter for wanting a mermaid tail blanket, they are adorable! Thanks for joining us!

  23. SO many great ideas! I leave for vegas this week so that heat index app is being installed right now. Fruit infuser bottle is something I need to keep me hydrated.

    • Jeni Hawkins Reply

Awesome, Natalie! Have a BLAST in Vegas and STAY COOL!

    • Natalie, have fun in Las Vegas, try your best to keep cool (though I know that’s almost impossible). At least all the casino’s and tourist attractions have great air conditioning. Enjoy your trip and thanks for joining us!
